Caroline Somers- Angel Investor and Executive Coach at Cassidy Bay Group
Caroline Somers has over 30 years of experience in the high tech industry. She currently is Co-CEO of Cassidy Bay Group, which assists companies to be more effective organizations by building powerful teams and through coaching executives to be successful managers and leaders. She has a wealth of business and operational experience including co-founding a successful startup and angel investing in more than 2 dozen companies. Ms. Somers has served on a number of boards in the community including on the board of Granite Networks, Chairman of the board of the Capital Angel Networks, Chairman of DNA Genotek which was acquired in 2011, board of Ontario Centres of Excellence, Parteq Innovations, on the advisory board of Amika Mobile, and the ICT Advisory board for Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. She has just completed the Directors educations program at the Institute of Corporate Directors. As well she is very active in the community and on a number of not for profit boards including being a founding board member for a local organization encouraging networking for business women and is currently on the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute and Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary.
Giovanna Mingarelli-CEO and Co-Founder, MCrowdsourcing (MC2) Inc.
As the CEO and Co-Founder of two international companies, M&C Consulting Inc. and Mcrowdsourcing (MC2) Inc., Giovanna Mingarelli plays the dual role of international technology entrepreneur and thought leader. For over a decade Ms. Mingarelli has worked in the field of political and digital communications and has served in the office of a former Prime Minister of Canada. She has been a Parliamentary witness and a keynote speaker relating to the advancement of young women in politics and digital democracy. A prolific writer, Ms Mingarelli has contributed to Harvard Business Review, The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, CBC-Radio Canada and the Hill Times. She is a regular contributor to the Huffington Post. In 2011, Ms Mingarelli was named a Global Shaper by the World Economic Forum for her efforts to improve the state of the world through entrepreneurship and civic engagement. She holds a degree in Political Science and International Relations from Carleton University. Her goal is to make life a game that we play.
Nicole Scheidl- Founder, Fit Minds
Nicole has drawn on her experience as a lawyer, educator, coach and business woman to be one of the founders and creative minds behind Fit Minds Cognitive Health Products Inc. Nicole completed her law degree at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University in 1988 and practiced law for a number of years. She completed her Masters in Law at Queen’s University (1999) and then taught Law, Philosophy and History at Hawthorn School for Girls in Toronto. She also served as Lower School Principal at Hawthorn. Moving to Florida in 2005, Nicole developed her business development skills in the IT sector. She was Director of Business Development at Agile Communications and QuickBills. Upon returning to Canada in 2008, Nicole took up the position of Director of Business Development at Prolity Corporation. Leaving her position in high tech, Nicole found herself at a crossroads and being inspired by Dr. Paul Nussbaum’s book, Save Your Brain founded Fit Minds Cognitive Health Products Inc. with Paul de Grandpré in June 2010. At Fit Minds, Nicole has created the patent-pending, InterAct® brain fitness program for seniors suffering from dementia and the Fit Minds® Club brain fitness program for healthy seniors.
Jennifer MacKinnon- CEO, Fenix Solutions
Jennifer is the CEO of Fenix Solutions, an Ottawa based web technology company specializing in Drupal. As Drupal specialists, Fenix is working with top tier clientele across Canada and North America providing association management solutions, content management solutions, extranets & portals, intranets and custom application development. Jennifer often finds herself in the position of mentoring business owners or those in the start-up stage. Jennifer’s interest and enthusiasm for entrepreneurship lead her to develop a monthly column profiling exceptional women business leaders in Ottawa called Ottawa Women of Wonder. Recently named one of the “Top 25 People in the Capital” by Ottawa Life Magazine, Jennifer has also launched a SaaS start-up called AgentApp which provides a combined content management solution / hosting environment for real estate agents
Janice Singer-Industrial Tech Advisor for IRAP
Janice Singer is an Industrial Technology Advisor (ITA) for the National Research Council’s Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP) in Ottawa. She works with small and medium sized enterprises with the purpose of supporting innovation and industrial R&D through financial assistance, advisory services, and linkages.Prior to becoming an ITA, Janice was a software engineering researcher with the Institute for Information Technology of the NRC. During her research tenure, Janice collaborated with multiple industrial and university partners including IBM, Microsoft, Mitel, Nortel, Bell Canada and several local SMEs. She acted as an adjunct professor with both the University of Victoria School of Computer Science and University of Ottawa School of Information Technology and Engineering. Janice holds a B.Sc. in Cognitive Science from University of California, San Diego, and a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. Before the NRC, she held positions at Tektronix, Xerox PARC, and IBM.
